Understanding Binary Oppositions

This post will give a brief account of what binary oppositions are and how they come into effect in teen movies.

Positive and negative connotations evoke how a word is understood. Binary oppositions demonstrate controversy and/or conflicting ideas in media and literature features. For example, 'hero vs coward', 'pretty vs ugly' and 'poor vs rich.' In teen movies this is usually exposed through mise-en-scene and sound. A classic example of this comes from the film "Freedom Writers."

The binary opposition present in this film are 'poor vs rich,' 'hero vs coward' and 'calm vs angry.' This is depicted through each actors' costume, props, gestures/movement as well as diagetic and non diagetic sound.

Donnie Darko Opening Analysis: Mise en scene

In today's lesson we were given a 'Donnie Darko Blogging Task'. The task was to analyse how locations and mise-en-scene, editing, camera work and the presence of characters portrayed their school environment in relation to teen movies.

Location & Mise en scene

The audience immediately establish the genre of this movie due to the school uniform worn by almost all of the persons included in the opening shots. We observe students converse, groom themselves in locker mirrors, and at one stage, witness a student handling drugs. The movement of the actors and props combined illustrate the common features of teenage behaviour therefore compliments the socially prescribed view of the high school experience.

Locations involved in the opening sequence includes a classroom, the school corridor and the outdoor space for students. Most teen movies are set inside a school building and its surrounding terrain so the content of this movie has been established successfully.

Analysis of Teen movies i watched

Ferris Bueller's Day off
This movie is about  Ferris Bueller and his two close friends taking a day off high-school. Ferris is a trickster and is smart, he does childish things (licking his palm) to trick his parents in believing that he's ill. Ferris's sister 'Jeanie' is frustrated as Ferris always gets away with his tricks and her parents never believe her when she's really ill. He finds school boring and wants to enjoy his day with his two best friends 'Cameron and Sloane. They take Cameron's dads Ferrari that had never been used and  "Less than a hundred were made". Cameron goes crazy as the mileage of the Ferrari increased and realizes that his dad's going to know that the car had been taken out. Furthermore Ferris's headteacher is on his case and wants to show his parents that he's lying about being ill. When he goes to his house he faces many surprises such as crashing into his vicious dog, going into his house and dropping his wallet.

Overall i really liked this movie as it was very funny and interesting. Himself and his friends had a lot of fun together and entertained me throughout the movie. I think that this movie is aimed at mid-teens most importantly as it is about missing school and having fun instead.

This is a funny clip showing how Ferris and Cameron trick there headteacher on the phone.

21 Jump street

21 jump street is about two friends that graduate from the police academy by helping each other  as one is intelligent but not fit and the other is athletic but not as intelligent. They're assigned to go undercover as high school students so that they can find who is dealing and distributing  a new synthetic drug and arrest the supplier. Throughout there first day they took the drugs so that they could be trusted by the dealer. They go through hilarious things during there first day but one is not happy

Overall i enjoyed this movie as it was very funny and entertaining. I didn't get bored watching this movie as it was always enjoyable and fun to watch. This movie is aimed at all ages as nearly everyone likes comedy  but is mainly aimed at teenagers between 13-19 as it is about high school and having fun.
These are some of the funny scenes through out the movie.

Camera

Donnie Darko
Camera
At  the beggining of the movie Donnie Darko camera is used at a low angle looking up and is taking long shots of students entering the school when the students are first arrive to the high-school. Long shots are being used to show costume, props and the setting of the school.

Medium shots were used in the school just after the arrival of the students. This shows us the main characters and the different types of characters such as the teachers, students, bullies and parents. During the medium shot the camera was at normal level so it looked like a student was walking around . Everytime it switched charaters it showed us the main characters in the movie.

A mirror was used to show us the reflection of the girl. This also shows us that she is one of the main characters.

Close up shot was used to show us that the bad student was doing drugs (cocaine).

Donnie Darko-character

Donnie Darko jumps out of the school bus with his 2 friends, he looks cool and well presented, neat and his taller so stands out from the other 2 boys. This shows he could be the main character. The bully, mean looking face, barges past the 3 boys giving them a dirty look and also pumpes up his chest to show his is in power. Then there is the strickt teacher wich gives the bully a dirty look to show how sher is watching him and to show that its not acceptable. Then we see the princess the girl wich is checking herslef out in the mirror and everyone is looking at. then we see the crinanal cool students which are sniffing cocaine before going into class, at the same time a teacher is watching but doesnt react to what they are doing he walks off. We also see the Geeks outside in the sun doing there work, shows their comitment. We then see the cheer leaders dancing and doing their own thing. Near the end we see the new teacher being intoduced to other teachers and has a reaction to what the students are doing ( surprised). The narrator in the film is like a student that is going around and filming everyone always at eye level, its like a guid that is showing the viewers around.

Analysis of teen films i watched recently

Film 1:Fred The Movie

This is the trailer for Fred The Movie

The film depicts the journey that Fred goes on in his attempt to get Judy to come to his house and sing with him.Fred is met by a variety of obstacles which could stop him reaching his goal like the neighbourhood bully,Judy moving and getting on the wrong bus. Then he finds himself stuck and unable to find his way to Judy's house, throughout his journey he comes across different things which he was like to say and do when he meets Judy.Eventually Fred finds himself stuck in a dilema when he travels across town , becomes lost and the only way for him to get to Judy house is to face his fears;which means going through the forest.Once he has conquered his fear he finds Judy's house and attempt to suprise her but it does not go to plan.

Personally i didn't like this film because i found the jokes to be to immature and found Fred's voice particularly annoying, for this reason i think the film is aimed at younger teens because people of my age or older will not find this film entertaining. This film followed some of the usual conventions of a teens film, being set in a school for the first scene sets for the rest of the film. The characters also fit particular stereotypes there most of the other teens in the film are the cool kids, Judy is the most attractive girl in school who is the most popular and Fred is the loner with no friends who struggles with fitting in.Moreover someone the other characters also fit the conventions of teen movies such as the parents who don't really care about their children and the over caring ones ;along with a bully who makes fun of the loner. One thing I did like about Fred the movie was the opening because it was unusual it was filmed like it as at a webcam and Fred breaks, down the forth wall as Fred talks directly into the camera, there are also a large amount of changes in the camera angles and shot types. Then there is cross cutting to pictures of Fred's house and his school. The non diagetic music is very fast and upbeat ,which makes the audience excited about what will happen next.

Film 2:Prom

The prom is a comedy Drama which is about creating the prom for the students of an American high-school.The film follows the usual conventions of being set in a high school but most of the normal, stereotypes are not in place. There are only a few such as the jock the most popular boy who has a pick of the females in the school and the younger boys look up to, there is also the most popular girls who all the boys like and their is often a slow motion edit whenever they enter the scene. This is done to highlight that all the attention is on them and all the other characters are irrelevant.Within the film there is also the outsider, the person who chooses to be different and disagrees with most of the other studentsa and the brain who has a number of great awards and achievements. There is also the loner who has little friends, struggles to talk to people and is unknown;this character struggles to find someone to take to the prom.

The binary oppositions of within Prom are Parents vs Teens, this is because the parents often interfear with the teens lifes and think they are doing the best thing for them, which often results in the teens rebeling.Another is Good vs Bad the the popular boy in the film is cheating on his girlfriend and lies to her she is unaware until she catches him;the girl who he is cheating with agress to a date with another boy which really likes her but lets him down because the popular boy asks her out.

The Bling Ring

The Bling Ring

Today we watched the film 'The Bling Ring.' It is a biographic teen movie based on a crime spree that a group of teens commit in LA. The crimes committed were on Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, Orlando Bloom and others. The opening sequence of this movie went against the usual conventions of a teen film; this is because in the early scenes, we observe a clip of what we believe is what is to occur later on in the film at some point. It is then followed by a montage of the previous clip, as well as pictures of shoes and videos of celebrities. I think this in particular made this movie more appealing to its viewer as we became engaged almost instantly in the storyline.
The Bling Ring focuses on three main factors which are frequently included in many teen films: money, drugs and fame/popularity. The teens in the film are driven by keeping up with the latest fashion which is promoted by celebrities. The characters were also influenced to take drugs as some celebrities have been arrested for like Lindsay Lohan, (there is a shot of her being arrested in the montage). There is very few teen film stereotypes used in this film; this may be because it is a biography, however the  character Rebecca could be described as similar to the 'popular girl in school' who all the other girls want to be friends with. The character Marc could also be perceived to be the person who always seeks approval from their surrounding peers - a 'wannabe.'

AUDIENCE TASK 2: analysis of 3 teen movies with different audiences

This post features three different teen movies of different genres: comedy, horror and romance.

LOVE DON'T COST A THING (2003) - Comedy

Love Don't Cost A Thing is a teen comedy which focuses on popularity and high school status. Instead of soley demonstrating the positive side to popularity, this film exposes the pressures of consistency in portraying a particular image to match what is expected by their peers. The above poster includes Nick Cannon (left), who plays the role of a "wannabe" and Christina Milian (right) who plays "the most popular girl in school." Although this movie has predominantly black actors, it is a film for all races and genders, targeted mainly at under 40's and due to its sense of maturity can be enjoyed by anyone. Furthermore, the dominant binary opposition in play is 'beauty vs ugly.'

JOHN TUCKER MUST DIE (2006) - Romance

John Tucker Must Die is another teen movie based on romance. There are various comical traits in this film but the central storyline shows "the most popular boy in school" date three women at the same time and is yet to receive his comeuppance. The movie is set mainly in high school so I believe the target audience to be for high school students; a niche market. John Tucker Must Die promotes the typical idea of teen movie, e.g. cheerleeders are most popular girls, the "geeks" are good at science and male athletes being the centre of attention; it compliments the stereotype perfectly.

FINAL DESTINATION (2000) - Horror

Final Destination is the first of five movies publishing the notion of an inability to cheat death. We focus on this specific Final Destination movie as it is considered a teen horror. This particular storyline behind cheating death, shows high school students that are to take a school trip to France. We notice the usual dimensions in the school environment - popular kids, geeks - but due to tragedy they are forced to overlook their trivial differences and stay close to one another. I believe the target audience for this movie to be horror enthusiasts of all ages as well as teenagers. The dominant binary opposition in play is 'good vs evil.'
